Felipe Anderson, for Lazio, belongs above all to this third category. Because the Brazilian was not simply an attacking winger: he was a technical detonator, one of those footballers capable of turning a deadlocked match into a sudden spectacle.

Arriving in the summer of 2013 from Santos, Felipe landed in Rome as one of the most intriguing prospects in Brazilian football. Lazio invested in him knowing they were buying pure, still incomplete talent with enormous potential. The initial impact was not easy: Italian football is more tactical, more demanding, less indulgent towards those who live by instinct. In his first season in biancoceleste there were flashes, but not yet a full explosion.

Then came 2014-15, and with it the real Felipe Anderson. Stefano Pioli ignited him, gave him confidence, handed him metres of pitch and freedom to play. The result was devastating: bursts of pace, dribbling, changes of rhythm, important goals and decisive assists. Within a few months the Brazilian went from being an unresolved promise to becoming the technical face of a Lazio side that started climbing high again.

The beauty of Felipe was the constant feeling that something could happen every time he received the ball. All it took was an oriented control, a body feint, a ten-metre burst to create panic in opposing defences. He knew how to start wide, cut inside, combine between the lines, link up play and then attack the space in behind. He was beautiful to watch, but above all difficult to read.

And yet, as often happens with players of pure talent, his story was not linear. At Lazio, Felipe Anderson alternated exhilarating seasons with greyer periods; moments in which he seemed ready to become an absolute top player and others in which his output faded. His most obvious limitation was precisely this: consistency. Not because the qualities were lacking, but because he could not always remain dominant for long stretches.

Even tactically, the Brazilian underwent a profound transformation. Born as an instinctive, almost anarchic player, he gradually learned to sacrifice more, to work without the ball, to become useful also in the collective balance. Under Sarri this evolution became evident: less chaotic flair, more discipline, more application, more consistent playing time. Perhaps less of a street footballer compared to his most sparkling days, but certainly more complete.

In his second Lazio chapter, which began in 2021, Felipe did not just find Rome again: he also rediscovered a central role. He became a trusted man for the coach, always present, always available, to the point of putting together an impressive streak of consecutive appearances. The 2022-23 season is the best snapshot of this maturity: 12 goals in all competitions, extremely high specific weight and a Lazio that soared all the way to second place in the league.

In the end, his balance sheet in the biancoceleste shirt tells much more than a simple sum of appearances and goals. It tells of 326 official matches, 58 goals, two different phases of his footballing life and a special connection with the Lazio faithful. Felipe Anderson was flair and sacrifice, acceleration and pauses, magic and imperfection. And it is perhaps for this very reason that, for better or worse, he will remain one of the most recognisable faces of Lazio in recent years.

Statistics

S.S.
