The History of the Lazio Shirt from 1900 to Today

🟦 1900–1920: The Greek Origins

The history of the Lazio shirt begins with Luigi Bigiarelli, who in 1900 chose the white and sky blue of the Greek flag to pay homage to the cradle of sport. The first kits were very simple:

white shirt with sky blue details,

long dark shorts,

no brand or crest.

These shirts, reconstructed today thanks to the work of the S.S. Lazio Museum, represent the pioneering essence of the club.

🔵 1920–1940: Sky Blue Takes Shape

In the 1920s Lazio stably introduced the full sky blue shirt, which became the distinctive trait of the club.

In the 1930s the first polo collars and the first hand-sewn numbers appeared.

The shirt remained free of sponsors and manufacturers: it was an artisanal garment, often made of heavy wool.

🪽 1940–1960: The Eagle and the Identity

In the post-war period, the use of the crest with the eagle, a Roman and Olympic symbol, spread.

The shirts became lighter, with a white collar and varying shades of sky blue.

Until 1957 the kits remained "unbranded", produced without commercial trademarks.

🧵 1960–1980: The Arrival of Sports Brands

From the 1960s the first technical suppliers like Gradella Sport and Lacoste appeared.

In the 1970s Lazio experienced the era of the 1973-74 Scudetto:

simple sky blue shirt,

white number on the back,

no sponsor.

It is one of the most loved shirts for its historical value and aesthetic purity.

🟡 1980–1990: Sponsors and Modernity

The 1980s marked the arrival of sponsors:

Sèleco,

Castor,

Cassa di Risparmio di Roma.

The shirts became more colourful, with geometric inserts typical of the time.

In 1987 Kappa arrived, then Umbro in 1989, with more international designs.

🦅 1990–2000: The Cragnotti Era and the Legendary Shirt

This is the most iconic decade of Lazio's aesthetic history.

With Puma (1998–2012) came shirts that became cult:

1998-99 with Cirio sponsor,

1999-2000 Scudetto,

2000-01 Champions League with Siemens Mobile.

The 2000 Scudetto shirt, white with a sky blue band or classic sky blue with yellow details, is considered the most iconic ever.

⚪ 2000–2010: The Post-Scudetto Era

With Puma, elegant and modern designs continued.

Sponsors like Stream, Del Monte, Parmacotto, INA Assitalia arrived.

The 2004-05 shirt with Parmacotto sponsor is one of the most recognisable of the period.

🔷 2010–2022: The Macron Era

Macron brought an aesthetic revolution:

celebratory shirts (115 years, 120 years),

retro designs,

the stylised eagle on the chest (2014-15), one of the most loved by fans.

The quality of materials grew and Lazio became a reference in Italian design.

🟦 2022–today: The Mizuno Era

From 2022 Mizuno introduced a clean and modern style:

brighter sky blue,

minimal collars,

celebratory shirts like the one for the 50th anniversary of the first Scudetto and for the club's 125th anniversary.

Recent shirts maintain a balance between tradition and innovation, with strong attention to detail and the lightness of materials.

The most iconic shirt: 1999-2000, the perfect year

The Puma shirt with Cirio sponsor, worn by Verón, Nedvěd, Mancini, Nesta and Salas, is unanimously considered the most iconic because it represents:

the Scudetto,

the Coppa Italia,

the European Super Cup,

one of the strongest teams in the history of Italian football.

The clean design, the intense sky blue and the crest with the golden eagle make it an eternal symbol.
